Noni Juice Side Effects

Noni is the common name for the tree Morinda Citrifolia which is native to the Cook islands of the South Pacific. It has been used for ages as a medicinal plant for curing various ailments. Nowadays it is common to find Noni extracts in bottle form that can be consumed. The only question though is the Noni juice side effects.

Not too much research has gone into the side effects of Noni juice, although many users have complained of problems ranging from stomach upset and gas to hepatitis. Research into the causes however has established that Noni juice, even if consumed in large quantities does not cause hepatitis.

Yet there is no scientific basis to establish that Noni juice does indeed have any medical or therapeutic uses, and so cannot be marketed as a medicine. Many people still however consume it because it is supposed to be good for the body.

Taking Noni juice does however have a few side effects. Nothing dangerous or life threatening, but many people have complained of gas and bloating after consuming it. This seems to be a generalized issue with Noni with almost all users getting some degree of indigestion or the other.

There are also more than 300 companies that market different variants of Noni juice, and not all of them retail pure Noni extracts. Some brands add other supplements, so checking the label is important. For example some brands are high in potassium, and although potassium is essential to the body, people with kidney problems may find it difficult to excrete excess potassium from their bodies leading to a condition called hyperkalemia.

Other brands also carry warning that pregnant women or children should not consume it, but since it is considered a herbal supplement, many of them do not list all the ingredients. While the Noni extract may make up the majority of the juice, there may very well be other organic substances that give different effects on the body.

Although athletes feel that the Noni juice improves strength and endurance levels, a few brands have been listed under the World Anti Doping Prohibited List. The bottom-line therefore is that although the Noni extract as such does not have too many side effects apart from giving indigestion and gas, different brands of Noni juice contain different combinations of stuff that may or may not cause problems. Some research is therefore called for before deciding on the brand for you.
